NOTE: I do not teach
this module anymore, thus these pages have fossilized.
This is the home page of the nos@napier module. It will run again
in September 2002. An important part of the module is the ability
to register onto it. So if you are taking this module make sure
that you register, and you will be kept up-to-date on its development.
There is also a new WAP system which provides text-based updated.
The School of Computer at Napier has a strong background in networking
and distributed systems. They have one of the most advanced regional
Cisco Academy in Europe, and now runs an MSc in Advanced Networks.
Along with this there is a well-established research group in
Distributed Systems and Mobile Agents.
The
NOS module has now run in its current form for several years.
If there is something from the past you would like to access you
can find it in some of the links given below. In the session 2001/2002
the NOS module ran in each of the first two semesters. The results,
and feedback from these can be sourced from the links below.
The
module contains a teaching pack which should be hand-out at the
start of the year. This pack should contain the main material, presentation
slides and multiple choice questions. One new feature of the module
is the introduction of Challenging questions. We can access these
by clicking on the link on the right-hand side of this article.
These should provide a little bit of stimulation for your brain.
Most of the material for the module is contained in the Module Organiser,
but the following quick a few quick links:
An
important concept in networking and the Internet is the client/server
architecture, thus I've developed a few programs which allows client/server
systems to be investigated. The module investigate implementations
of TCP/IP sockets, especially using Visual Basic. Another important
element is the investigation of session layer protocols, such as
HTTP, FTP and SMTP. The main code links are:
